Wedding photography may very well be one of the most intimate careers out there. When you think about it, the photographer is getting a glimpse into the biggest day in people’s lives, capturing the moments that they as a couple hope and plan to cherish forever. And, the service a photographer provides is something every bride thinks and stresses about until they are sure they have found their dream artist. This month, we at Vario Weddings wanted to give you a sneak peak into the heart and soul of one of our favorite local photographers, Garrett Richardson.
Garret fell in love with photography early in life. His sister is a wedding photographer in Texas, and she gave him a film camera when he was a teenager. True, he put it down for a bit and played a lot of music, but years later, while traveling through Greece on a study abroad trip in college, he shot on a professional DSLR camera every day. It was on that trip that Garrett happened to meet Megan, the woman to whom he has been married for 3 1/2 years, and it’s safe to say that Garrett fell in love with photography and his wife on the same trip. Ultimately, Garrett chose this business while exploring the incredible cliffs on Santorini Island and the natural beauty of such a historic part of the world. When asked about that decision he said, “I began to see the power of preserving story through artistic expression. I love people and the incredible energy that exists at a wedding. Capturing the magnetic love between two people is such an honor for me. Being able to step into that day with them and create images that will preserve their relationship for years to come is really what makes me come alive as a photographer.”
California boasts an incredible array of landscapes, gorgeous hotels and beautiful beaches, so naturally, we were curious as to which spots are Garrett’s favorites. “I love shooting in most environments, but specifically wineries on the central coast of California and natural places like Lake Tahoe, Yosemite, and the Santa Cruz mountains. Estancia La Jolla and Rancho Valencia Resort are two of my favorite venues in San Diego – The Montage Laguna Beach also has so much to offer when it comes to views over the ocean.” Well, Garrett, we completely agree.
As you look through Garrett’s galleries (www.garrettrichardson.co) you will see why he is someone we love to have capturing the weddings we work. His eye just finds those amazing, little details. He anticipates the laugh or the tear, and his finished images are simply breathtaking. We know that artists, in general, have favorite themes and trends to capture as colors, textures and styles evolve; but for Garrett, it is truly just seeing his couples design their wedding in a way that expresses important milestones in their relationship. It’s the creation of personal details that tie in the couple’s personalities that makes it fun for him, because not only does their wedding day get captured, but their entire love story as well.
Thank you, Garrett, for sharing your heart and talent with us! It is artists like you that make this industry captivating.
